The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Follows Lukewarm Feedback
Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified staff about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a clearer vision.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement follows a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the entire message from the president's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our audience.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce the new hire as the latest Lead of the team. Following a period of discussions, he officially joins us on next week.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most well-known series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in welcoming Ben next week. We are all eager to persist observing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
The President

Game Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, challenges, and challenges that evolve every session. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, gamble everything, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."
The game has not yet received an announced debut schedule or platforms, but players can look forward to more updates as production advances.
